We're looking to expand our Street Science Team. Could you help us deliver exciting STEM workshops to schools and colleges and to science busk at events and festivals around the UK?
About Street Scientists
Our Street Scientists are a team of enthusiastic students who are specialists in science busking. We bring science to life through short interactive demonstrations. These are inspiring as well as entertaining.
Our aim is to increase enthusiasm and public understanding of science, as well as break the stereotypes that surround the subject. We want to spark an interest in students at a young age to potentially influence a future in STEM - science, technology, engineering and maths.
About the role
Our STEM workshops are becoming more and more popular with schools and we need more enthusiastic students to join us to meet this demand.
You don’t have to be studying a scientific degree to become part of the team. If you have an interest in the subject and can communicate well to lots of different people then we’re keen to hear from you.
We deliver the majority of our workshops to primary aged children. If you have a GCSE level knowledge of science you won't need anything more advanced. We also provide full training beforehand. We'll ensure you are happy with the content of our workshops and demonstrations before you deliver anything.

Salary: £13.17 per hour
Closing date: Sunday 8 October 2023
Street Scientists inform and inspire the public about science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). You will perform live science demonstrations and answer frequently asked questions about STEM in the city centre and at various festivals and events, locally and further afield. You must be a current Newcastle University undergraduate or postgraduate student with a passion for STEM, a great communicator and a natural presenter.
Our Street Science Team will typically participate in the following activities:
- delivering science workshops to primary school children
- live science demonstrations at public events around the region
- talking to the public about their STEM related questions, and helping them investigate the answers
- promoting your experience of STEM and discussing why you love it
- providing fun STEM related activities for adults and children at local festivals and events
- taking part in on-campus events.
This will involve frequent weekend, evening and vacation-time work, though your hours are flexible and timetable restrictions will be accommodated. You will often be asked to work outdoors.
Street Scientists will be required to apply for an enhanced disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau (the cost of your application will be met by the University).
If your application is successful interviews will be taking place on the afternoon of Monday 30 October 2023. You will be asked to bring/explain/perform a science demonstration (further details will be emailed to successful applicants).
If you are successfully recruited to the team, you will receive full training and support.
Compulsory training will take place on the afternoon of Wednesday 15 November 2023.
